It Ends with Us
It Ends with Us is a love story, told through the eyes of Lily Bloom. A young woman starting her life post-college in Boston. The narrative switches between Lily’s life in the present and her whirlwind relationship with Ryle Kincaid. It then cuts back to her aged 15, living at home and falling in love with Atlas.
Lily’s teen years are cleverly delivered in the form of letters she wrote as a teenage girl to superstar Ellen DeGeneres. Lily grew up in a home where her mother was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her father. Lily finds refuge in gardening and watching the Ellen show, which is where she gets the idea to write down her innermost thoughts and emotions and share them with her hero, Ellen.
Flash forward to the present day and Lily’s adult life in Boston is going well, she has realised her dream of opening a flower shop and she meets and falls hard for a very charming and handsome man, named Ryle. Everything is perfect she has a new business, new friends, and a new boyfriend. Then life throws her a curveball, and she crosses paths again with her first love, Atlas.
A story of personal redemption
Colleen Hoover writes from a deeply personal perspective. She herself was born into a family where domestic abuse took place and she writes a poignant afterword that pays tribute to her mother and the strength she displayed in making life changes that enabled all involved to grow and make positive life changes.
It Ends with Us is a story that helps you understand the complex issue of domestic violence with the sensitivity it should be afforded. Things are never black and white in life and this novel helps the reader put themselves in that dangerous position and see that idea of – she should just leave- can be a lot easier said than done. Lily’s mother explains it very clearly in the text explaining that you forget who you are and what your limits are, each episode wearing you down more and more, giving your abuser more power and control over your life in the process.
This novel is an emotional journey and an important tale to tell, for we may all know someone that has sadly been the victim of domestic violence. This book is about how bad circumstances in life can seem inescapable at times, but with courage, support, and determination things can change for the better. It Ends with Us is a redemptive story about love and the power to break destructive cycles of behaviour, from ourselves and others.
It Ends with Us is a real success story!
This book has become an internet sensation from all the emotional reviews on TikTok. It was a New York Times Bestseller as well as hitting the top 5 romance novel for 2021 in The Sunday Times. It has over 33 thousand reviews on Amazon, 76% of which rate it 5 stars! Currently, it is has been translated into 20 languages. So why not see for yourself and buy a copy of It Ends with Us directly from Amazon .
It Ends with Us could well be made into a movie with Justin Baldoni’s company Wayfarer purchasing the film rights in 2019. Whilst no solid announcements being made yet, there is a ton of speculation on It Ends with US movie cast. Who would play Lily, Atlas, or Ryle? I can see Kathryn Langford, of 13 Reasons Why fame, making a great Lily. Controversial teen show Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi would be my pick for Ryle. With Stephan James, who played legend Jesse Owen in the movie Race, as the beautiful sensitive soul that is Atlas.
