What is Girl A about?
Girl A is the story of Lex Gracie, aka Girl A. The novel begins 20 years after Girl A’s escape from the house of horrors where she and her and 6 siblings were held captive by their abusive parents.
Lex Gracie returns from New York to deal with the death of her mother and the family's estate. Whilst back in her old hometown, the years of abuse and torment she endured at the hands of her parents, floods back into her mind and she is forced to confront painful memories of the past that she has buried so deeply in the confines of her mind.
Girl A is not a grisly tale of child abuse and torture. Instead of a blow-by-blow account of the abuse, Dean has delivered a story that focuses more on the survival element of the children as adults and how they have navigated the infamy and media glare that comes with their escape.
Girl A examines the long-term effects of the media attention that the survivors must endure. How the public’s thirst for gory details and memorabilia can be just as damaging to their current lives by disallowing them to move on and be truly free of their tormentors.
Each of the children’s stories shows how they have either embraced this notoriety or shied away from it as is the case for Lexie.
