Clae has worked very closely with DESSERTO to come up with a vegan material that is durable enough to use as footwear and have come up with the world's first sneaker made of cactus.
The product launch comes just in time for Christmas shoppers to pick up a pair, available in 1 of 3 colours - white, black and green.
Although Clae is a US company, they do have a site to handle UK and EU sales but there is limited availability if you want a pair before Christmas.
The shoe also features a 100% natural rubber sole with a cotton canvas lining. Plus, lucky recipients of their revolutionary new shoes will also have it delivered in an eco-friendly packaging made from recycled cardboard.
Clae really has cut no corners that may compromise the sustainability of their new product, even in the manufacturing process. The cactus plantation in Mexico is certified fully organic with no herbicides and pesticides used and no harm to biodiversity. Plus, manufacturing is also based in Mexico.
Cactus itself is a fantastic natural product that is naturally sustainable and economical. Plantations only require a small amount of rainwater and earth minerals to thrive.
Their cactus is certified organic by the USDA and even has the seal of approval from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).
To boost its sustainability points, they added laces made of recycled nylon from plastic waste, and the heel tab detail is made from non-toxic, synthetic neoprene.
