Kitchen Design and Money Saving Tips

Get a chalkboard to plan meals Chalkboards are a very useful addition to any kitchen because they help with meal planning. Just write down what meals you are planning to eat over the next few days or even the whole week and you will be surprised how much money you will save on your shopping because you will only buy what you are planning to use and you will save space in your cupboards with food you bought but didn't ever get round to eating.

Save Jars for storage Don't throw away that finished jam or honey jar. If it's a particularly nice one, just wash it out and re-use it to store things like herbs and spices (that you use most often) and make sure you place them on a shelf or counter top where they are easy to access, and they actually look great. Herbs and spices that look great are whole black peppercorns, cinnamon sticks, cloves, turmeric, oregano, thyme, chilli flakes, curry powder.

Label stuff you put in the freezer Anyone with a frugal bone in their body knows to always save leftovers for another meal but most people end up not knowing what's what in the freezer and end up never using their valuable free meals. Solution is to label your leftovers and make sure you plan to eat them within the next 7 days so there isn't an overwhelming build up.

Knives are best stored on a magnetic strip on the wall Knives are used probably more than any other bit of equipment in the kitchen so make sure they are within easy reach and not jumbled up in the draw with everything else. Using the right knife for the job will save you time and time is money. Plus when they are stored in a neat knife block or on a magnetic strip on the wall, that frees up space in the draws for other stuff.

Shelves instead of cupboards Ok every kitchen needs some cupboards but shelves are so much more efficient for storing stuff that actually gets used. Out of sight, out of mind. If stuff is stored in cupboards you will end up forgetting you have them and the next time you touch them will be when you're doing a clearout and throwing money in the bin. Cupboards are best used in partnership with shelves. Simply take stuff out of the cupboard that you want to make an effort to use and it will always be in sight and will have a much better chance of being used instead of binned.
